ASSISTANT DEPUTY SECRETARY U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ADDRESSES SCHOOL BUILDING WEEK BREAKFAST

Deborah A. Price
Deborah A. Price, assistant deputy secretary for the U.S. Department of Education
Deborah A. Price, assistant deputy secretary for the U.S. Department of Education, was the guest speaker at the 2006 School Building Week Breakfast, hosted by the CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust. The Breakfast took place on October 17, 2006 at the Willard InterContinental in Washington, D.C.

Speaking to "Creating Safe Schools, Ms. Price's comments centered on the Breakfast's theme of the importance of safe, healthy, high performing and sustainable school facilities in fostering student achievement and community vitality.

"I am delighted to be here in support of School Building Week and the School of the Future student design competition. The competition is an excellent example of how students can apply mathematics to real-life situations. It also shows how academics and school safety can work together. Secretary (Margaret) Spellings and I believe that safe and welcoming school buildings are the foundation upon which high academic achievement is possible. Students cannot learn and teachers cannot teach in schools that are not safe, healthy and secure," Ms. Price remarked.

Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, Ms. Price and Thomas A. Kube, executive director, CEFPI, also attended the recent White House Conference on School Safety. "Our schools house one of the nation's most precious assets: our children. The design of effective schools is a key step in preventing crime and emergencies and mitigating the damage that may occur. Attractive, well-designed and well-maintained facilities also play an important role in contributing to a positive school culture and climate. Working together, I know that schools can be stronger, safer and healthier places for our nation's children," Ms. Price concluded.

Ms. Price oversees the Education Department's activities related to safe schools, crisis response, alcohol and drug prevention, the health and well being of students and building strong character and citizenship. She also leads the Education Department's Homeland Security efforts.

School Building Week, April 30-May 4, 2007, was originally created as a one-day celebration by the Council of Educational Facility Planners International to bring attention to the important role school buildings play in the educational process. The Foundation now leads this week-long nationwide effort in partnership with 36 organizations, including three federal agencies.

Proceeds from the benefit breakfast sustain the significant programs and projects under the aegis of the Foundation. The CEFPI Foundation facilitates research on the impact of healthy, high performing, safe and sustainable school facilities on student achievement and community vitality. The Foundation also funds and supports School Building Week, the Dale Scheideman Merit Scholarship Program and the Paragon Schoolhouse Project.

SCHOOL BUILDING WEEK 2007

School Building Week Design Competition Ad
The CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust has taken the School Building Week 2007 School of the Future Student Design Competition nationwide. Curriculum for this design competition has been developed, addressing the national math standards for middle school students (grades 5-8) which provides a vibrant venue for applying mathematical concepts relevant to students' lives. The curriculum, which was reviewed by the National Education Association (NEA) includes two 9-week units with lesson plans. Each of the two units of study, Ideal Learning Environments and Designing the Floor Plan is broken down into lessons that not only emphasize mathematics, but also communication, teamwork and further connections to English, communication, social studies, health and other sciences. It is assumed that the included lessons are not a student's first exposure to the standards and that prior teaching has provided requisite skills for success. The lessons are designed to be implemented once a week and the duration of both units are intended to last a total of one semester. The curriculum has been placed on CDs and sent to all 14,383 school districts across the nation.

35 federal agencies and national associations partner with the CEFPI Foundation in School Building Week. Local and regional design competition juries will be conducted in January and February in each of seven regions of the country. The regional winning teams (3-4 class representatives, a teacher and a parent) will receive travel and hotel accommodations in Washington, DC, to participate in the final jury process slated for May 2, 2007. A School Building Week Reception will be held at the National Association of Realtors Silver LEED building on Thursday, May 3 following a day on Capitol Hill for the finalists, where they will meet with their respective congressmen and be introduced in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee chambers as well as the House Education Workforce meeting. The Awards Ceremony will take place at the National Building Museum in DC on Friday, May 4, 2007.

November 15, 2006 is the final date for school districts to enroll as participants in the competition. To enroll, please go to sbw.cefpifoundation.org. Click on your state on the homepage map and follow the prompts. We will assist you in securing mentors to enhance the program for the students.

We applaud the keen interest, leadership and service that CEFPI and Foundation members have given to improving school buildings so please accept our invitation to motivate, inspire and provide this opportunity for the kids!

PARAGON SCHOOLHOUSE PROJECT UPDATE

The Paragon Schoolhouse Project (PSP) is an outreach program of the CEFPI Foundation dedicated to help support school districts improve the built learning environment for students, staff and the community that they serve. Following two years of tireless efforts by members of the PSP committee, the Foundation reached a decision to rescind the offer to help support the School District of Philadelphia, and specifically, the Spring Garden Elementary School. Conversations with the school district began over two years ago with mutually agreed upon plans, objectives and enthusiasm. Twenty-four months later, the Foundation is unable to bring its resources to fruition, due to what appears to be legal stonewalling. As a result, we have communicated with the many CEFPI architects, engineers, media and industry partners who have graciously donated of their time, material and resources for the Spring Garden Elementary School, that we can no longer move forward with the project. The intent was and has always been to help and promote the School District of Philadelphia through resources that may not otherwise be available.

Katrina
Katrina

We are taking a step forward with the Paragon Schoolhouse Project and joining forces with the CEFPI Katrina/Rita Task Force, which is strongly committed to and engaged in assisting the St. Bernard Parish, LA in their renovation and rebuilding efforts. The Katrina Taskforce has completed a facility assessment for Triste Middle School as well as a master plan for growth as students return. The Task Force has also drafted a Disaster Preparedness Report covering topics such as disaster planning, management and recovery; best practices for K-12 in disaster planning; and hurricane crisis management, planning and recovery. It is the hope of the PSP that the CEFPI participating architects, engineers, media and industry partners will donate their time, material and resources to the St. Bernard Parish. We continue to believe that our children and the communities where they live are our first priority.
