SCHOOL BUILDING WEEK 2006
Spotlighting our nation's schools and reinforcing the connection between school facilities and student learning, School Building Week 2006 included outstanding events throughout the nation. School districts of every size celebrated School Building Week, April 17-21, creating greater public awareness of the importance of well planned, high performing, healthy and sustainable schools that enhance student success and community vitality.
School Building Day, originally a one-day celebration, was established by the Council of Educational Facility Planners International to draw attention to the important role that school buildings play in the education of our children. Now under the aegis of the CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust, the annual April event has gathered strength and grown into today's weeklong commemoration. The Foundation has led this nationwide effort with partnerships from 36 organizations, including three federal agencies. The planning of this effort involved nationwide coordination between multiple agencies in achieving a single goal of developing awareness about the condition of school buildings and their significance in the lives of children.
District of Columbia Public Schools, Montgomery County Public Schools (MD) and Virginia student design competition finalists were honored at a School Building Day Awards ceremony in the nation's capitol on April 21, 2005. The students participated in the School of the Future competition, challenging them to demonstrate how they would renovate their own schools in order to create a better learning environment. Architectural students from Howard University and Ferrum College served as mentors to the students, leading them through a program focused on the impact of good planning and design on the built environment.

Excellence Awards were presented at the event to recognize groups or individuals that exemplified invaluable leadership in protecting children from environmental health risks.
School Building Week Events Across the Nation
The Washington Chapter of CEFPI sponsored a video contest, Why We Love Our School, encouraging students to document why they love their school building.
In observation of School Building Week, the Ohio School Facilities Commission, the state agency charged with providing quality school facilities throughout Ohio, hosted students involved in the DREAM SCHOOL 2006 program and participated in other School Building Day activities.
School Building Week 2007
School Building Week 2007 will see the School of the Future student design competition go nationwide! Engaging school districts of every size, the student design competition will include comprehensive lesson plans and curriculum appropriate for elementary, middle and high school levels. Six (6) regional juries will be conducted and representatives of the six winning teams will travel to Washington, DC for the final jury process, a reception to take place at the National Association of Realtors building ( the only green Silver LEED building in the nation's capitol), and an awards ceremony at the National Building Museum. Additionally, there will be events scheduled to honor the 2007 School of the Future regional winners.
Schools are places of great hope – indeed, they are the building blocks of our nation. Sustainable schools support culture, the community and the environment; in short, they encourage smart growth and healthy communities. Today we have an opportunity to create effective learning environments that reflect the community's unique assets as well as its needs; serve as a resource of education, health and human services to students and neighborhood members alike; and, strengthen community life.
In collaboration with the CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust, the Council of Educational Facility Planners International, US Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Energy, AIA, National Association of Realtors and more than 35 other organizations partner in this weeklong commemoration.
The quality of our schools affects us all. Please join us in creating a legacy to our children and our communities.
School Building Week features the School of the Future student design competition, a national School Building Day Walking School Bus as well as media events and unique celebrations. PARAGON SCHOOLHOUSE PROJECT READY TO ROLL
Spring Garden Elementary School
School District of Philadelphia, PA
|
The final Memorandum of Understanding with the School District of Philadelphia has been acknowledged and a summer work matrix for Spring Garden Elementary School has been compiled. Plans are in place for the Paragon Schoolhouse Project to commence in late June, following the close of the school semester. The proposed work is scheduled to take 47 days and the showcase renovation areas will provide an inviting eyeful – exciting, energizing, engaging – as the students return to class at the end of August.
A round of applause goes to Ellen Savitz, Chief Development Officer; Pat Henwood, Director of Capital Programs, and Ken Stevenson, School District of Philadelphia, (SDP) for their assistance in the fruition of program. However, the biggest thanks go for the tireless efforts of David Schrader, Schrader Group Architecture, LLC and Scot Bini, URS Corporation who have really made it happen and to all the partners who are providing goods and systems. Thank you for making a real difference for the kids!
The School District of Philadelphia and the CEFPI Foundation will host a media event prior to the onset of work and the major rollout event will take place upon completion of the renovated areas. A media reception will be held at Spring Garden Elementary early this fall.

REGINALD TEAGUE CHALLENGE
At the CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust Board of Trustees meeting on October 2, 2005, Regie Teague offered a challenge to the Board of Trustees as well as the CEFPI membership, for a $1,000 individual contribution with the goal of raising $50,000 in individual donations at the 2006 CEFPI annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona. To date, $1,000 contributions have been received from Board of Trustees members Victoria Bergsagel, Bill DeJong, Ron Fanning and Regie Teague. Inherent in fundraising is the axiom that people give when they are asked, and rarely give when they are not approached. To that end, we would like to extend this challenge to the entire governance of the Council and encourage them to enlist their constituencies in rising to this challenge. A letter will be sent to each member of the CEFPI Board of Directors and all regional officers, requesting their participation.
TOM AND HUGH DOWN UNDER!
Thomas A. Kube, executive director, and Hugh Skinner, REFP, MCIP,president, CEFPI and ex-officio member of the Foundation Board of Trustees, seem right at home "down under", as the Australasia regional conference gets underway.
