CEFPI FOUNDATION WELCOMES CONGRESSMAN MAJOR R. OWENS AS HONORARY ADVISOR
Congressman Major R. Owens, Honorary Advisor to the CEFPI FACT Board of Trustees
|
The CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust takes great pleasure in announcing that Congressman Major Owens (D-NY) will serve as Honorary Advisor to the Board of Trustees. Congressman Owens has served with distinction in the United States House of Representatives for the last 19 years, and commands respect and admiration as one of the most senior African-Americans in Congress. Known as the "Education Congressman," Major Owens exudes a passion to provide the best possible learning environments for all children, particularly in underserved urban areas.
As chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Education Braintrust, Congressman Owens has focused his efforts on education reform and on increasing minority representation in the fields of science, mathematics and technology. Sharing the Congressman's commitment to education and community empowerment, the CEFPI Foundation has enjoyed our relationship with Congressman Owens in this forum and plans to take an active role in this year's CBC Education Braintrust Conference, September 22-24, 2005 in Washington, DC. Last year, the CBC Education Braintrust honored the Foundation with a TEC Partnership Award for the Paragon Schoolhouse Project. The Foundation also collaborated with the Congressman in designing the No American School Left Behind Web site and will continue to support this program.
BACK TO SCHOOL 2005 BREAKFAST TO BENEFIT FOUNDATION
Parris N. Glendening
|
The CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust, in collaboration with the Healthy Schools Network, will host a Back to School Benefit Breakfast on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at The Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, DC. An initial fund-raising event, the benefit breakfast will serve to introduce the Foundation to the private sector community and to generate funds to foster research regarding the impact of school facilities on student achievement and the communities they serve. Proceeds from the Breakfast will be shared by both organizations and used to facilitate research that illustrates the impact of healthy, high performing school facilities on student achievement and community vitality.
Parris N. Glendening, former governor of the state of Maryland, will keynote the event. A longtime supporter of healthy communities, former Governor Glendening currently serves as President of Smart Growth Leadership Institute. As Governor of Maryland, he made education a top priority. He has served as chairman of the National Governor's Association and is recognized as a national environmental leader.
The CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust and the Healthy Schools Network wish to acknowledge Heery International, Inc. for underwriting the Back to School 2005 Breakfast. Tickets must be purchased by September 1, 2005 and will be held at the door. Contributions are fully tax deductible to the extent provided by law.

PARAGON SCHOOLHOUSE PROJECT
Spring Garden Elementary School
School District of Philadelphia, PA
|
Paragon Schoolhouse Project (PSP) participants Jim Hutchison, Andy LaRowe and Pam Babuca, JAED Architects and Bill DeJong, DeJong & Associates recently conducted a Facility Assessment of Spring Garden Elementary School, providing the operations committee with draft documents outlining a general understanding of the building condition needs. The onsite assessment consisted of a one-day review by the four person team of all building systems and included interviews with Elois Dupree, principal, and Fred Wells, maintenance manager. Although the school is nearly 75 years old, it has been well maintained and is in relatively good condition. However, as with all buildings of this era, the building does not meet current codes. Members of the PSP operations committee will meet with Ellen Savitz, chief development officer, School District of Philadelphia on Friday, August 12, 2005.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the results of the assessment and the current scope of work as well as to engage in an open dialogue as to how to proceed with this undertaking.
Tom Ellis, Tandus Corporation, project chair; David Schrader, SchraderGroup Architecture, project architect; Scot Bini, URS, project manager; Bob Barton, Catalyst Financial; Elois Dupree, principal, Spring Garden Elementary; Tom Kube, executive director, CEFPI; and, Barbara Worth, associate executive director, CEFPI Foundation will attend the meeting.
